The first edition of the Bayernliga was created in 1945, shortly after World War II. In its early days, it consisted of 40 amateur clubs. By 1976, the league had expanded to 65 teams and they began to be operated by professional organizations.

Competition Format:

The Bayernliga follows a promotion and relegation system like most other German football divisions. Each season is split into two divisions, North and South, with 18 teams in each division. Every team has to play against each other during the course of the season, resulting in a total of 34 games for each club. At the end of the season, the top four teams in each division will be promoted to the next higher division and the bottom four teams will be relegated to the lower division.

The Bayernliga is home to many of the best teams in Germany, including 1860 München, SpVgg Unterhaching and FK Pirmasens. Each team has their own stadium with capacity ranging from 1,000 to 30,000 spectators. Most of these stadiums also host several other events, such as concerts and festivals.

The Bayernliga is the highest amateur football league and the second highest football league in the state of Bavaria, Germany. It is one of fourteen Oberligas in German football. The league was formed in 1945 right after the Second World War. The FC Bayern Munich II and local rivals 1860 Munich II were both in the league until 1996. Since the 2012-13 season the league has been divided into a southern and northern division. The two teams who finish at the top of each division at the end of the season are promoted to the Regionalliga Bayern. The bottom four teams from each division are then relegated to the Landesligas. As of the 2018-19 season the Bayernliga has 14 teams in each division and a total of 28 teams. It remains the highest league in Bavaria for the non-professional teams and is a “feeder” league to the Regionalliga.
